Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry - James 1:19.
We need to be very careful when speaking as our tongue has the power of life and death. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit - Proverbs 18:21. He who answers a matter before he hears it, It is folly and shame to him - Proverbs 18:13. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks - Mathew 12: 34. Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips - Psalm 141:3. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer - Psalm 19:14.
Both praising God and cursing people who are made in God’s likeness cannot come out of the same mouth. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water - James 3:9-12.
Let our speech be always filled with grace and edify others as we are accountable to God to every idle word we speak. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one - Colossians 4:6. Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers - Ephesians 4:29. But I say to you that every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement - Mathew 12:36.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, Let us always be careful and slow to speak. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
