He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth - Isaiah 53:7.
Jesus did not open His mouth even when He was
oppressed and afflicted. He was scourged and mocked. Then Pilate therefore took
Jesus, and scourged him - John 19:1. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe
on him, and twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put
a staff in His right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him.
“Hail, king of Jews!” - Matthew 27:28. After they had mocked him, they took off
the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him
- Matthew 27:31.
Jesus
was stripped and a crown of thorns was planted on his head. The soldiers smote Him
on his head with a reed. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown
of thorns, and put it about his head, And began to salute him, Hail, King of
the Jews! And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him,
and bowing their knees worshipped him - Mark 15:16-19.
Jesus was spit and His face was struck by the
hands and fists of Roman soldiers, Then some began to spit at him; they
blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the
guards took him and beat him - Mark 14:65. And when He had said these things,
one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand,
saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?” - John 18:22. I gave my back
to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my
face from shame and spitting - Isaiah 50:6.
Jesus was disfigured and his form marred beyond human likeness. Just as there were many who were appalled at him - his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness - Isaiah 52:14. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death - Psalm 22:14-15.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, You
did not even open Your mouth when You are oppressed and afflicted. Help us to
love our enemies. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
