When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” - John 19:26,27.
The third word that Jesus spoke on the cross was a word of compassion to His mother and the disciple whom He loved. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” - John 19:26,27. John is the only disciple who is at the foot of the cross when Jesus is dying.
Jesus fulfilled His responsibility by committing His mother Mary to the care of John, the disciple He most loved. It shows the love and care of Jesus towards His mother even on the cross. And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home - John 19:27. Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever - 1 Timothy 5:8.
Like Jesus, let us also honor our father and mother. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you - Exodus 20:12. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” - Ephesians 6:1-3.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, Let us have the love and responsibility like You in honoring our parents and taking care of them. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
