Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good - Romans 12:21.
Saul had tried to kill David many times. But
David refused to kill Saul even though he got the opportunity to kill him. He
said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master,
the Lord’s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the
Lord.” With these words David rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack
Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way - 1 Samuel 24:6,7.
David refused to take revenge against
Saul but instead leaves it in God’s hands. He is careful to do what is right in
the eyes of everyone. Therefore, let the Lord be judge, and judge between you
and me, and see and plead my case, and deliver me out of your hand - 1 Samuel
24:15. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is
possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take
revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written:
“It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord - Romans 12:17-19.
Saul confessed that David has done good to him. Saul asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” And he wept aloud. “You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly - 1 Samuel 24:16-17. Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you - Luke 6:27. Let us love our enemies and return good for evil. Do not repay anyone evil for evil - Romans 12:17.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, Help us to
overcome evil with good. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
