Sufferings of Christ

For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps - 1 Peter 2:21.

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed - Isaiah 53:3, 5.

There were many who were appalled at Him - His appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness - Isaiah 52:14.

He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth – Isaiah 53:7.

Though He was beaten, mocked and scourged, He did not open His mouth. He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth - Acts 8:32.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting - Isaiah 50:6.

And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him - Luke 22:63-65.

And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified - Mathew 27:27-31.

The plowers plowed on my back; They made their furrows long - Psalm 129:3.

They also gave me gall for my food And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink - Psalm 69:21.

I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death. For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet - Psalm 22:14-16.

All the disciples deserted him and fled - Matthew 26:56.

He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors - Isaiah 53:12.

From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day - Matthew 16:21.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God - 1 Peter 3:18.

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us - 2 Corinthians 5:21.

Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously - 1 Peter 2:23,24.

Jesus had the weight of the sins of the entire world on Him - 1 John 2:2.

Though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered - Hebrews 5:8.

For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp. Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate - Hebrews 13:11,12.

But rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy - 1 Peter 4:13.

Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God - 1 Peter 4:1,2.

And if children, then heirs - heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together - Romans 8:17.

Since he himself had gone through temptation and suffering, he is able to help us when we are being tempted - Hebrews 2:18.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, Help us to follow Your steps as You have suffered for us to leave us an example. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
