And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you - Luke 22:19,20.
Jesus instituted the Lord’s
supper to remind us of Him. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed
and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My
body.” Then He took the cup, and gave
thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My
blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins -
Matthew 26:26,27. It is a holy communion, to have a fellowship with each other.
For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one
bread - 1 Corinthians 10:7.
The Lord’s Supper is a time to remember that
Jesus gave Himself for us on the cross. Do this in remembrance of me - 1 Corinthians
11:25. We eat the bread in remembrance of His body and drink the cup in remembrance
of His blood. In this remembering we also proclaim the Lord's death till He
comes. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the
Lord’s death till He comes - 1 Corinthians 11:26.
We need to self examine ourselves prior to partaking of the Lord’s supper. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep - 1 Corinthians 11:28-30.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, We thank You for
Your body that is broken for us and Your precious blood that is shed for us. In Jesus’
name we pray. Amen.
