Centurion At The Cross

So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!” - Luke 23:47.

The Centurion who stood near the cross heard all the seven sayings of Jesus on the cross. He saw Jesus praying for others. Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do - Luke 23:34. He saw Jesus mercifully reaching out the thief hanging next to Him. And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” - Luke 23:43. He also saw Jesus lovingly speaking to His mother. He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” - John 19:26,27,

The Centurion saw many miraculous events that took place when Jesus died. For three hours, there was darkness over all the land. Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land - Matthew 27:45. A few moments after He died, there was a tremendous earthquake and the veil of the temple was torn into two from top to bottom. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split - Matthew 27:51.

The Centurion had also seen Jesus enduring all the sufferings with meekness. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth - Isaiah 53:7. The Centurion and those with him guarding Jesus feared greatly and they were transformed after seeing all the happenings on the cross, So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!” - Matthew 27:54. The Centurion who saw what had happened glorified God by saying that this was a righteous man.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, Let our life transform others. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
