Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips - Psalm 141:3.
Be wise
We need to be wise in speaking as our words will have impact on others. The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18. In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise - Proverbs 10:19. The heart of the wise instructs his mouth and adds persuasiveness to his lips. Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Proverbs 16:23-24. The one who guards his mouth protects his life; the one who opens his lips invites his own ruin - Proverbs 13:3.
Give grace
Our speech should give grace to those who hear. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one - Colossians 4:6. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear - Ephesians 4:29.
To see good in the days we live
We need to be careful in what we speak to see good in the days we live. Who is the man who desires life and loves length of days that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it - Psalm 34:12-14. He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction - Proverbs 13:3.
Store the Word of God in heart
We will speak life giving words when we constantly consume the Word of God by storing it in our hearts and meditating on it day and night as our mouth speaks out of the abundance of heart. I have stored up Your word in my heart, that I may not sin again You - Psalm 119:11. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you. Colossians 3:16. For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned - Matthew 12:34–37.
May the Holy Spirit help us to set a guard over our mouths and let us be careful of what we say by speaking only life-giving words. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer - Psalm 19:14. Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles - Proverbs 21:23.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, Help us to set a guard over our mouth and speak only life giving words. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Amen.
