Words of Suffering

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” - John 19:28.

The fifth saying of Jesus on the cross is “I thirst”. They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink - Psalm 69:21. Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth - John 19:29. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death - Psalm 22:15.

Jesus who suffered great thirst on the cross, thirsts for souls too. I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty - John 6:35. If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from him - John 7:37, 38. For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, And My blessing on your offspring - Isaiah 44:3.

Let us hunger and thirst more for God and His presence. As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? - Psalm 42:1,2. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled - Mathew 5:6. I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God - Psalm 69:3.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, Let us thirst more for You and let our heart thirst for souls to be saved. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
