He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!”. John 19:26-27.
Jesus addressed third word to his
mother Mary and John, the disciple whom he loved. Mary submitted herself to the will of God
since the birth of Jesus till His death on the cross. Then Mary said, “Behold
the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word” - Luke 1:38. But Mary kept all these things
and pondered them in her heart - Luke 2:19. His mother kept all these things in
her heart - Luke 2:51.
Mary’s soul was painfully pierced when
she saw all the sufferings of Jesus on the cross. Then Simeon blessed them, and
said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and
rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against (yes, a
sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts
may be revealed - Luke 2:34, 35.
Jesus committed Mary to the care of the disciple he loved the most. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother." And from that hour John took Mary to his own home and obeyed what Jesus told him to do. But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever - 1 Timothy 5:8. Honor your father and mother - Ephesians 6:2.
