Jesus Overcame The Temptations of Devil By God's Word

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God - Ephesians 6:17.

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil immediately after being baptized. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry - Mathew 4:1, 2. Jesus overcame the temptations of devil by God's Word. Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him - Mathew 4:11.

First Temptation

The devil first tempted Jesus by telling Him to command the stones to become bread. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’” - Mathew 4:3,4. So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord - Deuteronomy 8:3.

Second Temptation

Then the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem to the highest point of the temple and told Him to throw Himself down. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God’ - Mathew 4:5-7. You shall not tempt the Lord your God as you tempted Him in Massah - Deuteronomy 6:16.

Third Temptation

Finally, the devil showed all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and tempted Jesus. Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve’” - Mathew 4:8-11. You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him - Deuteronomy 6:13.

Like Jesus, let us also overcome all temptations of devil by God’s Word that is effective against the devil’s attacks. God’s word is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword - Hebrews 4:12. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you - James 4:7.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places - Ephesians 6:12.

Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices - 2 Corinthians 2:11.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour - 2 Peter 5:1.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, Help us to overcome all temptations of devil like You by Your Word. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
