After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” - John 19:28.
The
fifth word that Jesus uttered on the cross is “I thirst” which is a word of
suffering. Jesus expressed His thirst knowing
that He had accomplished the will of His Father and to fulfill the Scripture. He
was here fulfilling the prophecy from Psalm 69:21 which says that “They
also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink”.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You
have brought Me to the dust of death- Psalm 22:15.
God had provided a way for us to drink the
living water that completely satisfies our soul. Jesus answered and said to
her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again. But the water that I
shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into
everlasting life” - John 4:14. If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow
rivers of living water - John 7:37,38.
Let us thirst for God and quench the thirst of God by reaching the lost souls. As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? - Psalm 42:1,2. I am weary with my crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God - Psalm 69:3. O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water - Psalm 63:1.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, We thank You for
the living water that You have given us to flow over our soul. In Jesus’ name
we pray. Amen.
