Lust of the Flesh, Lust of the Eyes And The Pride of Life

For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - is not of the Father but is of the world - 1 John 2:16.

The lust of the flesh

Eve could not overcome the lust of the flesh. She saw that the fruit is good for eating when the devil tempted her. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food - Genesis 3:6. The first temptation that Jesus faced was the lust of the flesh and He overcame it. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread” - Matthew 4:3.  Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh - Galatians 5:16.

The lust of the eyes

Eve could not overcome the lust of the eyes. She saw that the fruit was pleasing to eyes. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes - Genesis 3:6. The second temptation that Jesus faced was the lust of the eyes and He overcame it. Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me" - Matthew 4:8,9. Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him - 1 John 2:15.

The pride of the life

Eve could not overcome the pride of the life. She said that the fruit was good for gaining knowledge when tempted by devil. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate - Genesis 3:6. The final temptation that Jesus faced is the pride of the life and He overcame it. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone’” - Matthew 4:5,6. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever - 1 John 2:17.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, Help us to overcome the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of the life like how You overcame. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
