He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth - Isaiah 53:7.
Jesus did not open His mouth even when He was oppressed, afflicted, beaten, mocked and scourged. Though He was beaten, mocked and scourged, He did not open His mouth. He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth - Acts 8:32. Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him - Mark 14:65.
Christ suffered for us leaving us an example by not reviling in return when He was reviled and no deceit was found in His mouth. We are called to follow His steps by doing the same. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously - 1 Peter 2:21-23.
Let us also set a guard over our mouth by following the steps of Christ who did not open His mouth when oppressed, afflicted, beaten, mocked and scourged. Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips - Psalm 141:3. He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction - Proverbs 13:3. For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech" - 1 Peter 3:10. In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise - Proverbs 10:19.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, We thank You for suffering for us, leaving us an example, that we should follow Your steps. Let us set a guard over our mouth. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
